Gayle Manning, the state representative for Ohio District 52, emphasized the importance of community unity in protecting children and promoting awareness during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Her statement was made on X.

"April is Child Abuse Prevention Month," said Manning, House Representative. "Let's stand together to protect our kids. Raise awareness. Build a safer future."

In April 2025, Ohio initiated several statewide efforts to observe National Child Abuse Prevention Month. According to the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, these initiatives included the "Ensure They Shine" campaign led by the Ohio Children's Trust Fund. The campaign aimed to raise public awareness through events such as #WearBlueDay on April 9, where residents wore blue to show solidarity with victims. Community engagement also featured a 5K Walk in Cuyahoga County to spread the message that child abuse is preventable. These activities are part of a broader strategy to enhance child safety through public participation.

A 2024 report by the Child Welfare League of America revealed that Ohio recorded 22,439 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in 2022, translating to 8.8 cases per 1,000 children. This represents a 10.8% decline from 2018; however, infants under one year old remained the most affected age group. The most frequently reported forms of maltreatment were physical abuse (39.5%) and neglect (38.1%). These statistics highlight the ongoing need for protective measures and support services across the state.

Programs like the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) have shown effectiveness in reducing child abuse risk in Ohio by promoting positive caregiving practices. Nationwide Children’s Hospital reports that this initiative operates in 36 counties and focuses on parent education and support, leading to improved family relationships and lower incidences of maltreatment. The Center for Family Safety and Healing coordinates this work as part of a broader preventive strategy, with evidence indicating measurable impacts on child welfare outcomes.

Manning is a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, currently serving as Speaker Pro Tempore and representing the 52nd District. According to her official biography, she spent 37 years as an elementary school teacher before transitioning into politics. Her legislative interests include education and child welfare, informed by her teaching background and long-standing advocacy for children’s issues. She is noted as the first woman to hold the Pro Tempore role in the House.
