State Representative Gayle Manning (R-Avon) and State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) recently recognized Elyria High School senior Mateo Medina for his historic achievement in winning the sprinting "triple crown" at this year's State Finals. Medina won the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter events.
“We are excited to have such a talented athlete in our district and are impressed with all his hard work and success," Representative Manning said. "I am looking forward to seeing how he continues to grow and excel in his collegiate career and beyond.”
Medina is the 16th athlete to achieve the sprinting "triple crown" in Ohio. His final time in the 400-meter ranked sixth nationally and was the third fastest in state history. Mateo’s points alone beat runner-up Wayne High School by one point, securing the Division I State title for Elyria. He is the fifth athlete, and the first since 1998, to clinch the title by himself.
Medina recently competed in the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, where he was runner-up in the 400-meter event. He was recognized as an All-American in the 100, 200, and 400 meters this season.
Medina will continue his running career at Arizona State University this fall.
