Speaker Pro Tempore Gayle Manning announced that Lorain County has been awarded Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) grants for two projects. Lorain County Public Health, in partnership with Elyria City Schools, received $80,000. This funding will support programs such as walk and bike to school day events, in-school walking and biking curriculum, and bike rodeos.

North Ridgeville City Schools also received a grant of $35,000. The funds will be used for community campaigns on pedestrian and bike safety, educational initiatives, and the expansion of the local Girls and Gear Program.

“These projects protect our students and prioritize their overall health by encouraging them to walk and bike to and from school while also improving safety along those routes,” said Manning.

In total, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Transportation have awarded $7.6 million in grants to 24 projects aimed at enhancing safety for K-12 students who walk or bike to school. The SRTS initiative focuses on building and improving transportation infrastructure around schools, including sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and traffic-calming features.
