Congressman Bob Latta participated in a recent hearing by the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee to discuss federal legislation on autonomous vehicles (AVs). Latta emphasized the importance of the United States maintaining its leadership in automotive innovation through supportive policies for next-generation technologies. He highlighted that AVs could improve road safety and enhance mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic-related fatalities reached 39,345 in 2024. Congressman Latta noted, “About 94 percent of all the accidents being caused out there is because of driver error.” He stressed the need for legislation focused on safety: “It’s always been safety first, safety last, safety always.”
Jeff Farrah, CEO of the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, expressed gratitude towards Congressman Latta for his efforts in advancing AV legislation. Farrah acknowledged Latta's collaboration with Congresswoman Dingell and emphasized the importance of federal involvement in vehicle design and performance issues to build public trust.
Latta co-chairs the Congressional Autonomous Vehicle Caucus, which aims to educate Congress on improving road safety and accessibility through autonomous vehicle technology.
